Last year, the morning after my 40th Birthday Party, my husband David had a seizure in the shower. During the course of the the seizure the hot water got turned on, the cold turned off, and the drain was closed. He spent up to 15 minutes in the scalding water before he came to enough to get out of the tub. That is when I heard him collapse to the floor. I had checked on him just 15 minutes before. EMS and Fire arrived and wrapped him in a burn blanket and tarp and carried him down the
stairs, bringing him to the Foothills where the burn unit was located. David had full thickness burns to his right hand, from the waist down including both legs and feet. He spent 59 days away from me and our four children, had multiple skin grafting surgeries (at one point he was a complete open wound from the neck down to his toes), learned how to walk again not once but twice, spent another 6 months as an outpatient and still does rehab at home daily. The Firefighter Burn treatment Society's work directly impacted us - from specialized equipment like heat lamps for David's three hour dressing changes, to daily physio to keep his scar tissue soft, opportunity to connect with other survivors through events and access to top-notch health care professionals thanks to their support of professional development for burn unit staff. Please consider supporting this event - many people don't need these supports, until they do - and my hope is that you never do - it made a world of difference for us and it will for any others who experience burn injuries and their families.
